ATHENS, TN // 2026 REVIEW

The Scream Chamber

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.9/5)

Bucket List Chaos Done Right

Kicking off a major multi-haunt weekend on Friday the 13th, The Scream Chamber set the bar early—and somehow, nothing else we visited managed to top it. With so many events happening that weekend, narrowing down three nights was a challenge, but this one immediately proved it deserved its spot. Even among heavy hitters, this was the most memorable experience of the trip.

HAUNT EXPERIENCE

The Scream Chamber leans into its haunted history, using it as a foundation for both its storytelling and Midway characters. Inside the house, scenes feel like fragments of different nightmares stitched together, which actually works in its favor—the idea that some unknown darkness has overtaken the grounds explains the chaotic flow.

"Atmosphere is where this haunt separates itself. It doesn’t just place you in a scene—it makes you feel hunted. Lighting, haze, fog, and sound are dialed in to the point that every space feels intentional."

The set design backs all of this up with movie-quality environments. Rooms feel alive, with shaking walls, environmental effects, and layered details that give each space weight. While a few traditional animatronics are used, they’re clearly secondary to what this haunt does best—letting actors drive the experience.

SCREAM SQUAD

"This is where The Scream Chamber becomes something else entirely."

With the touch pass, the experience transforms. You’re not just walking through—you’re part of the show. Actors push, pull, isolate, and interact constantly, turning you into a moving target. At the same time, non-touch guests still get a full show, with actors maintaining high engagement across the board. The density is impressive, often with multiple actors working a single room, ensuring there are no dead spaces.

Costuming and makeup are on par with professional productions. High-end silicone and latex masks, combined with detailed makeup work, create characters that feel real up close. Standouts included a terrifying Nun and a swamp creature that emerged from a fully realized well scene—both moments that felt straight out of a film set.

Performance is nonstop. There are no filler moments. Being dragged back through sections, locked briefly in confined spaces, or singled out by characters keeps the pacing relentless. At one point, I was claimed as a pet by a possum—one of those bizarre, unforgettable interactions that only happen in a haunt firing on all cylinders. Meanwhile, Heather got pulled into encounters with clowns, pig-people, and that standout swamp scene.

Even the Midway actors are fully committed. A hearse driver searches for lost souls, a chaotic Cupid steals shoes and hearts, and a Raggedy Ann drifts through the crowd. It all feels like part of the same world.

OPERATIONS

"Operations are just as impressive as the performance."

The group-number system is one of the most efficient we’ve seen. Guests are free to explore the Midway until their group is called, eliminating traditional line fatigue and keeping the energy up throughout the night. While color-coded verification could tighten things further, the staff were actively checking tickets, and the system ran smoothly.

The way they balance touch and non-touch guests is especially well thought out. By controlling ratios, they ensure touch pass guests get the experience they paid for while still enhancing the show for everyone else.

Inside the haunt, pacing is excellent. Groups are pulsed effectively, and actors actively manage flow to prevent stacking. Despite the high interaction level, we never felt like we were in a conga line.

At around 16 minutes, the main attraction is shorter than some, but it’s so dense and action-packed that it feels much longer. And the night doesn’t end there—escape games, a fog/clown maze, axe throwing, and even hearse rides give you plenty of ways to extend your visit.

GUEST SERVICES & AMENITIES

"The Scream Chamber delivers a full experience beyond just scares."

Staff were consistently friendly and engaged. Conversations didn’t feel transactional—they felt like part of the experience, especially when learning about the haunt’s history. The Midway strikes an interesting balance: it’s welcoming and relaxed, even while the haunt itself is intense.

Food and drink options are readily available, with additional vendors rotating in during the regular season. Combined with the add-ons, there’s enough here to turn a quick visit into a full night out.

From a safety standpoint, nothing stood out as a concern. The environment is controlled, and while terrain can vary due to the outdoor setting, everything felt manageable. Accessibility appears possible, though it’s worth checking ahead depending on conditions.
